West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1960 – 1973)

Following Buckingham's departure to Ajax in 1959 the club saw another decline, although Derek Kevan's 33 league goals in 1961–62 saw him finish as joint-top goalscorer in the First Division, alongside Ray Crawford of Ipswich. Jimmy Hagan was recruited to arrest Albion's slide in 1963. In September 1964 a young striker was signed from Notts County F.C. who, over the next decade, was to become the club's most iconic player ever:
Jeff Astle. The club was already feeling the effects of the dramatic social changes of the 1960s, in the form of falling attendances and the end of the players' maximum wage. Hagan, despite the spirit of the times, was a martinet on the training ground and frequently bred conflict with a playing squad that was beginning to enjoy the new economic and social freedoms. However, he shrewdly built the team in personnel and skill, leading them to a League Cup triumph in 1966 as Albion (in their first League Cup appearance) beat West Ham 5–3 on aggregate in the last two-legged final. During this time the club's attack was built around the strike duo of Astle and club-record goalscorer Tony Brown, with Bobby Hope prompting from midfield and Clive Clark on the wing. The following season was a hollow disappointment, with Albion losing in the final of the League Cup to Third Division Queens Park Rangers F.C. (losing 3–2 after being 2–0 up at half-time), making an early exit from their first European campaign and struggling to maintain their place in the First Division. Had Hagan had more friends at the Hawthorns, he might have been given time to fix the problems but, in 1967, he was replaced by Alan Ashman. Ashman led Albion to their fifth FA Cup victory in 1968, Astle, now known to fans as 'The King' becoming the first player to score in every round of the competition.

After beating Colchester, Southampton, Portsmouth and Liverpool in the earlier rounds, Albion then knocked out rivals Birmingham City 2-0 at Villa Park. They then defeated favourited Everton 1-0 in the final, thanks to an extra-time Astle goal. They then defeated including the only goal of the final against Everton. Albion also defeated the newly crowned European Champions Manchester United 6–3 at the Hawthorns in front of an estimated 55,000 fans. In 1969 Albion again reached the FA Cup semi-finals but narrowly lost out to Leicester City. The following year the club reached the League Cup final again but lost out to Manchester City 2–1. In the same season, Jeff Astle became the first man to score in both an FA Cup and League Cup final. He also finished as the First Division's leading scorer, an achievement matched by his team mate Tony Brown in 1970–71.
Former Albion player Don Howe replaced Ashman as manager in 1971. Howe had just coached Arsenal F.C. to the League and Cup double and was regarded as one of the game's foremost theoreticians, but he was unable to prevent Albion's relegation to the Second Division in 1973.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1950 – 1960)

A talented new squad started to develop, marked by the arrival of Ronnie Allen in 1950, scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. on his home debut in front of a crowd of 60,945. However, the board were frustrated by the lack of trophies and Smith was dismissed in 1952. Radically, Smith was replaced by Juventus F.C. coach Jesse Carver who introduced football into training. Though Carver was soon to be seduced back to Italy by S.S. Lazio, (although domestic household pressures were a paramount factor) his eight months in charge were a defining moment for the club. His replacement, Vic Buckingham, recruited from the amateur leagues, inherited an intelligent, well-co-ordinated team, playing a flowing style of attacking football that he was to build upon.
In 1953–54 Albion had their most successful ever season, coming agonisingly close to being the first team in the 20th century to win the League and Cup double. They topped the league for most of the season but a loss of form towards the end of the season meant that they finished as runners-up to fierce rivals Wolves in the league. Albion did however win the FA Cup, beating Preston North End 3-2 in the final. After beating Chelsea and Rotherham they faced Newcastle United in Round 5, winning 3-2 in front of 61,088 fans crammed into the Hawthorns - over 20,000 more were locked out. Spurs were beaten in the quarter-final and then Albion edged past Staffordshire rivals Port Vale at Villa Park in the semi-finals. Albion had become known for their brand of fluent, attacking football, with the 1953–54 side being hailed as "The Team of the Century". One national newspaper went so far as to suggest that the team be chosen en masse to represent England at the 1954 World Cup finals. Later in 1954 Albion played in 'Le Soir Festival de Football', losing 5-3 to Hungarian side Honved in Brussels. Ronnie Allen was the leading Division One goalscorer for 1954–55, scoring 27 league goals. However, in the next few years some disappointing league positions followed. In 1957 Albion reached the cup semi-finals but lost out to arch-rivals Aston Villa. That year they also became the first British professional team to win a game in the Soviet Union, at that time firmly under the Iron Curtain. They played three games, drawing against FC Zenit in Leningrad (Russia) and beating Dynamo Tbilisi (Georgia) and the Soviet Army side, CSKA Moscow (Russia). The Soviets were invited back to England in October and Albion beat the Soviet Central Army 6-5 in front of 53,805 fans. The 1950s also saw the arrival of players Don Howe, Derek Kevan and Bobby Robson.
Kevan
In the season 1957-58, Allen, Kevan and Robson scored 78 goals between them. Despite never matching their achievements of 1953–54, Albion remained one of the top English sides for the remainder of the decade, achieving three consecutive top five finishes in Division One between 1957–58 and 1959–60.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1939 – 1950)

In the league season of 1939-40, only three games were played, but the results were deleted from the records when, on 3rd September, Britain was once again at war with Germany. Immediately, all organized football was suspended, but unlike the first war, not all games were suspended it was generally decided that football of a somewhat limited regional nature should continue for the entertainment of the munitions- workers in their limited leisure time. Albion resumed in the Midland Regional League.During the first six years of the War, all soccer was regionalized with the same teams meeting five or six times a year, attendances plunged, sometimes dipping below the one thousand markOnce normal league competition was resumed in 1946 (the 1945–46 season had been organised on a regional basis) Albion remained in the Second Division.
In June 1948 Fred Everis resigned as secretary. Albion appointed Jack Smith to new new role of team manager over 100 applications had been recieved for the new job, Smith had played for the Albion between 1942 - 44 in the War League, within 9 months Albion were back in Division One.Two league seasons had been spent in trying to get a settled side which could win promotion and perhaps get past the fourth round of the Cup for the first time since 1937, and it seemed that this had been finally achieved by the autumn of 1948Albion's First Division reign commenced with a 1-0 home victory secured in the last six minutes at home to Charlton on 20th August 1949 and the team consolidated its position to gain a comfortable mid-table position by Christmas. Among the victims were Everton 4-0 and champions Portsmouth 3-0, but the great trophy was always, the FA Cup.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1930 – 1938)

Albion scored a club record 105 league goals in 1929–30, but could only finish sixth in Division Two. In 1930–31 they won promotion to Division One and ended in the finishing table at place 2 with 54 points just seven points behind the Everton. Only the goal-scoring exploits of Dixie Dean of Everton deprived Albion of the Second Division championship. The opening match, of the 1931 -32 season the team travelled to Highbury to meet Arsenal and won 1-0 and later completed a rare double over the champions with a similar scoreline at the Hawthorns.Albion and Everton, the two promoted sides were both early pace setters, and were joint top in October, after Albion beat Manchester City 5-2 at Maine Road. Everton were destined to go on to clinch the title on their return to Division one In the same season they also won the FA Cup, beating local rivals

In 1935–1936 prolific striker W. G. Richardson scored 39 league goals, still a club record. Albion reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1937, beating Arsenal 3-1 in the quarter final in front of a record 64,815 fans. However, they lost 4–1 to Preston North End, although the Albion players were clearly affected by the death of chairman and former player Billy Bassett two days before the game. The following season, 1937–38, Albion were relegated to Division Two. With the 1939–40 season only a few games old, the Second World War broke out and football was suspended.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1925 – 1930)

1925 - 26 season saw a change in the offside rule, the current law regarding offside was that a player was in an offside position when there were less than three opponents between him and the opposition goal when his side passed the ball forwards ! The new ruling reduced that number to two, giving forwards so much more freedom. Its effect was a dramatic one, adding twenty or thirty goals to the total of each club over those of the previous year. Albion went up from fifty-eight to seventy-nine and this despite dropping eleven places in the table and instead of twenty 'clean sheets' they could only manage eight, conceding an extra forty-four goals. Huddersfield was to make football history with their third successive championship. Finally they finished in 13th place in the table in 1st Division in the FA Cup 4th Round.
1926-7 season would see the loss of Albion's premier status after sixteen profitable years at the top and were thrown at the bottom of the table with only 30 points.1927 -28 season back in the lower section signed Jimmy Cookson who at the time was destined to be easily the best goal-scorer in the history of the club. Cookson began as a fullback with Manchester City, but after failing to make an impression and moving on to Chesterfield in the Third Division he was converted to centre-forward. The season ended in 8th in the Second Division in the table.
1928 -29 season of the West Bromich Albion was an average season which ended in 7th place in the table with having 46 points in Division Two.Promotion and, unfortunately, relegation and two Cup-final appearances as well as many glittering performances in the First Division. The new decade opened in the way that the period was to continueThe main priority for the Albion was to get back into the First Division. But here also they were again relegated because an end at the 6th place in the table in 1929-30 season.
The 2010–11 season was West Bromwich Albion's fifth season in the Premier League. Albion return to the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship. West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1920 – 1925)

In 1920-21, it was to be expected that the next season would be something of an anti-climax a repetition of the previous league-winning season would have required quite heroic efforts. The team was living on its reputation, as is so often the case with champions out to hang on to their title, drawing the first four games although only losing three of the first sixteen. The team was never really convincing even during this spell, suffering from a lack of goals something which had not been lacking in the previous season, with only three goals coming from the centre-forward position in the first twenty games. The Cup run ended before they had begun, in the first round, as Notts County, relegated the year before gained revenge for the eight goals put past them at the Hawthorns by by winning 3-0.
In the 1921-22 season the gradual slide down the table continued, Notts County struck again in the Cup, winning in the third round after a replay after Albion had done well to beat Chelsea and Liverpool that year's champions, away from home,. The centre-forward problem was solved in November. The solution was the acquisition of a tried and tested forward, Welsh international Stanley Davies, 'Mr Versatility', from Everton. In his six years, this highly skilful and effective number nine scored eighty-three goals in 150 first-team appearances, revitalizing the team, not only by scoring his much needed goals but also by linking well with Morris, who refound his scoring touch playing alongside the Welshman.West Bromiwich Albion ended at 13th in the table with 40 points.
When the 1922-23 season began, improvements in results were generally expected as the new players settled in, but there was soon a major setback when winger Claude Jephcott, playing great games at the peak of his form suffered a fractured ankle in the match at Aston Villa, exactly a year after a similar injury at Middlesbrough, forcing his very premature retirement from the game. Young players were drafted in as replacements, the spot being shared by two youngsters, Spencer and Tommy Glidden, whilst Pennington's place was satisfactorily filled by William Adams and Tommy Magee was brought back at right-half after a lengthy absence from first-team reckoning, Sam Richardson dropping back into the reserves for a spell. The Albion did start to produce some better form that year and the final league position of seventh was a considerable improvement over the previous two years.
1923-24 season ,the Cup brought back memories of the previous seasons defeat at Charlton when the draw cast the team at Millwall's Den, but a goal from Joe Carter decided an always close confrontation. Old friendly opponents Corinthians, who in recent years had made the decision to enter the Cup despite their strictly amateur status, were the next in line and went away from West Bromwich beaten 5-0 , a result which enabled the renewal of the old Cup rivalry with Staffordshire neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were then leading the Third Division. The teams finished level at the Hawthorns, with Tug Wilson equalizing direct from a free-kick in the last quarter of an hour the same player missing a last minute chance to settle the tie from the penalty spot, although Wilson and Gregory won the replay in front of a new Molineux record gate of 40,083 in midweek.
The 1924-25 season was always going to be interesting and the team didn't disappoint. Only three of the players remained who had won medals with the club in 1920 Richardson, Pearson and smith. Any how they finished at 2nd place in the table with 56 points just 2 points below away from Huddersfield Town.

West Bromwich Albion played well in the Division One and became the Champions of FA Community Shield with 2-0, against Tottenham on 15-05-1920.The Great War broke out in August 1914 but the season was allowed to run its course to the end of the season. Over the years Albion have produced many great heros who have been celebrated in many books but the real heros are the many who gave their lives in battle.Harold Bache Killed in action 1916 Aged 27 Lancashire Fusiliers. With the title won at last, the team were free to go for two records which were within their grasp. They had already set a new high for the First Division points total their final tally was sixty, which stood as the best for eleven years although it should be pointed out that as the First Division had been extended that year to its present complement of twenty-two, the teams were playing four games more than in previous years. The first target was to become the first premier team to notch a century of league goals and that was duly Managed, aptly enough by ace scorer Morris, in a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool the final total reaching 104, a huge number which was not even approached until 1929, significantly after the drastic change in the offside law which had made goals relatively easy to score by the worst sides.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1900 – 1910)

In early 1900, a special meeting was called, when it was decided to invite the business syndicate for a renewal of the £2,500, and, in addition, to call up a further five shillings per share of capital. However, the syndicate could not be induced and the remedy was to find a new playing area.It was pointless looking in the direction of Hill Top or Great Bridge, as the local teams in Dudley and Wednesbury, then attracting 6,000 per match, would provide too much opposition. Two factors, a reduction in the fare to one penny on the cable-tram run to Handsworth, and the growing population of Handsworth and Smethwick, decided upon the final site, which was leased from Sandwell Park at a rent considerably lower than that on Stoney Lane so on 30th January1900, the directors signed a lease for a new ground. All of Albion's previous grounds had been close to the centre of West Bromwich, but on this occasion they took up a piece of land south of the town towards Birmingham an "out of town" site on the borders of Handsworth and Smethwick. The area was covered in hawthorn bushes, which were cleared to make way for the new ground, hence its name, The Hawthorns. The new site, on which the now famous Hawthorns stadium was to be built was a marshy piece of land near two farms, midway between Handsworth and West Bromwich town centre, and after essential draining operations had been carried out, work began during the close season of 1900 to erect the spacious new ground, which was finished only shortly before the season's first games. The club signed an amended lease for the land on 14 May 1900, giving them the option to buy within 14 years from the owner, Sandwell Park Colliery, and Albion did indeed buy the freehold on the ground in June 1913.
The first match at The Hawthorns took place on 3 September 1900, when Albion drew 1-1 with Derby County. Derby's England international Steve Bloomer scored the first Hawthorns goal, with Chippy Simmons equalizing for Albion. Although Bloomer might not have played for Albion at least he was from the Black Country being born in Cradley Heath.
The 1900-01 campaign was not a successful one however, as Albion finished bottom of the table and were relegated to Division Two. Their defeat to Sheffield United on the final day of the season was witnessed by just 1,050 spectators, which remains the record lowest crowd for a league game at the HawthornsThe 1901-02 campaign was successful one however, as Albion finished Top of the table in Division Two and were promoted to Division One.
1902 – 1903 They played in Division One and they finished 7th in the Table.
1903 – 1904 they played the FA Cup First round against Nottm Forest with 1-1 and FA Cup 1st Rd Replay again against Nottm Forest and lost with 3-1. Again West Bromich Albion finished at the bottom of the table and relegated to Second Division for the season 1904-05.They didn’t perform well in 2nd Divison also and finished the table at 10th place. They also had to play in Division Two 1905 -1906, due to their bad performance and finished the table with 52 points at place 4th in the table.
Even the West Bromwich Albion still playing in Division Two in 1906 – 1907 season. They played the FA Cup First Round on 12-01-1907, against Stoke with 1-1 and again in a replay of FA Cup 1st Rd against stoke with 2-2. So as result they had to play the FA Cup 1st Rd 2nd R, against Stoke, and afterall won by 2-1.On 02-02-1907 , Albion played FA Cup 2nd Round and won by 1-0 against Norwich and qualify for the FA Cup 3rd Round against Derby and won by 2-0On 09-03-1907, they played the 4th Round and won by 3-1, against Notts Co. And with great efforts and a hard luck in the semi final they lost the game by 2-1, against Everton on 23-03-1907, again a 4th finish in the Table with 47 points.West Bromwich Albion 1907 -1908, in Second Division didn’t performed well and finished at 5th place in the table. In 1908 – 1909, in Division Two, they played the FA Cup 1st Round against Bolton and won by 1-0 and lost the 2nd Round by 1-2 against Bradford. They finished the table at 3rd place with 51 points.Division Two 1909 – 1910, was not successful and they finished the table at 11th with 37 points.

The 2010–11 season was West Bromwich Albion's fifth season in the Premier League. Albion return to the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship. West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1885 – 1900)

The move from The Four Acres to Stoney Lane came from a need to move to more spacious accommodation due to the growing popularity of the club. Several sites had been viewed until a lease was offered by a local undertaker Mr H Webb, who owned a field at the rear of the Sandwell Brewery. The lease was for seven years and an annual rent of £28 was agreed. Work began almost immediately to convert the ground into a suitable home for The Albion. The field was returfed and ashes were laid around the playing area. A wooden grandstand affectionately known as The Noah's Ark Stand was built It was on the Brewery side which ran along Sandwell Road North which was covered in the centre for 600 spectators. The uncovered portions at each end held a further 1500 spectators. The opposite side of the ground was covered in ash and it was gradually raised back so everyone got a good view although it had no covering at all and could have been very slippy on rainy days. The first season tickets at Stoney Lane cost Five Shillings ( 25p ) the usual admission charge being six pennys (2 1/2 p).The first game played at Stoney Lane was against The Third Lanark Rifle Volunteers from Glasgow 5th September 1885 Albion won 4 - 1 with the first goal coming after 5 minutes from Tom Green.
Over the fifteen years spent at Stoney Lane this was probably the clubs most successful playing over 350 games there and losing only 70. They scored over 900 goals and were undefeated in 14 consecutive FA Cup matches between 1885 and 1893 that run ending with a 3 - 2 defeat by Blackburn Rovers in the First Round. In the 1885-86 season WBA beat Aston Unity 4 - 1in the First Round which began a run to their first ever FA Cup Final appearance. The tie took place 31st October 1885 in front 0f 4,027 fans at Stoney Lane. Two goals each from Tom Green and Ezra Woodhall put the Albion safely through to Round two to face local rivals Wednesbury Old Athletic again at home. Wednesbury were seeking revenge for being beaten 4-2 by The Albion the previous season again in Round Two, only 3,578 turned out for a thrilling game which ended 3-2 with Loach scoring two and George Bell the third. Albion received a bye in the third round but on Saturday 2nd January 1886 Albion met their Arch rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers for the first time in the FA Cup although the two sides had met in four friendly's Albion winning 3 and twice in The Birmingham Cup drawing 1 - 1 and Albion winning the replay 2- 1. This was however the first time the two sides had met in a major competition. Bell, Green and Loach again not disappointing the Home crowd of 5,196 with a 3-1 victory. On to Round Five and another home tie facing one of the older teams of the FA Cup Old Carthusians.

Old Carthusians first entered the FA Cup in the 1879 -1880 season the year The Strollers were formed and in fact won the cup on their second attempt in 1880 - 1881season. Beaten semi finalists in 1883, 1885, they were a high scoring team who despite getting byes in the third and fourth round had scored 8 goals in this seasons competition and were much fancied to go all the way this season. January 23rd 8,137 saw a hard fought game with again Tom Green scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory to put Albion through to the last eight. Brentwood, Blackburn Rovers, Small Heath Alliance, Redcar, South Shore Swifts, Old Westminsters, West Bromwich Albion. all waiting for the news of who they would meet in the 6th round Albion hoping to avoid the holders and the team who ended their previous cup run Blackburn Rovers. The draw was kind another home tie against unfancied Old Westminsters. Albion made light work of this tie with a 6-0 victory A hat trick for Gem Baylis , 2 for George Bell and one for Spry Woodhall. Gem Baylis's hat trick was the first by an Albion player in the FA Cup. The semi final to be played at Aston against Small Heath Alliance who would change thier name two years later to Small Heath and then in 1905 became Birmingham City. 4,100 turned out to witness Albions 4-0 victory Loach 2 Woodhall 2 to reach the final of the competition to be played at the Kennington Oval.

The opponents were Blackburn Rovers, who were appearing in their third successive final. Four of the Blackburn's players, Fergie Suter, Hugh McIntyre, Jimmy Brown and Jimmy Douglas were playing in their fourth final in five seasons. Fred Bunn was Albion's first-team centre-half at the time. However, he got injured and Charlie Perry replaced him for the final Albion dominated the match but Herbie Arthur, the Blackburn goalkeeper, made several good saves and the game ended in a 0-0 draw attendance 15,156 with gate recipts of £650.16,144 saw the replay which took place at the Racecourse Ground, Derby. A goal by Joe Sowerbutts gave Blackburn Rovers an early lead. In the second-half James Brown collected the ball in his own area, took the ball past several WBA players, ran the length of the field and scored one of the best goals scored in a FA Cup final. Blackburn now joined the Wanderers in achieving three successive cup final victories. This was a magnificent achievement by Albion for a team of amateurs. Seven members of the team that reached the 1886 FA Cup Final still worked at Salter's Spring Factory. This included Bob Roberts, Charlie Perry, George Woodhall, George Timmins, Ezra Horton, George Bell, and Harry Bell. All eleven players were born within a six-mile radius of West Bromwich. At the time the town had a population of 56,000 people.

Blackburn had reached the Final for a third time by virtue of a narrow 2-1 victory against Swifts in the semi-final. Their opponents this time were West Bromwich, who showed their mettle as cup fighters from the moment they set foot on the Oval pitch.Few gave Albion a chance that day, but there was a shock in store for everyone, the Rovers included, for the match finished goalless. In fact, had it not been for some great defensive work by Suter, Turner and Arthur in Rovers' goal, Albion would certainly have won.Rovers' excuse for a below-par display was that the team had got cold watching the Boat Race in the morning, had had to miss lunch, and left themselves barely enough time to drive to Kennington and get changed before the Final kicked-off. Rovers, in fact, very nearly won in the closing minutes when Fecitt's shot glanced a fraction the wrong side of a post.

The replay took place at the Derby County cricket ground, and for the first time the Cup was fought for and won outside London. Snow had fallen all through the morning of the match, only ceasing shortly before the kick-off, and yet a 12,000 crowd gathered to see the game.Rovers, now with Walton in for Heyes, led at half-time with a goal by Sowerbutts, scored after twenty-six minutes as a result of a raid in which Walton and Fecitt were prominent. The same player again beat Roberts, but the Rovers players made no appeal for a goal. thinking him offside. Later it transpired that the referee would have been willing to allow the goal to stand, as Sowerbutts had been played on by an Albion defender.Albion, with their famous rushing tactics, fought like demons, and constantly harried Arthur in the Rovers goal. At a time when Albion were striving hard for an equalizer, a memorable goal by centre-forward Jimmy Brown clinched victory for Rovers with seventeen minutes to go. An Albion attack broke down and Brown collected a pass from M'lntyre well inside his own half, and suddenly set off on a run for goal. He dribbled past man after man and at last slipped the ball between the Albion posts for a wonderful individualist goal.
On Saturday 2nd April, for the first time, but by no means the last, the Final was fought out by two sides from the Birmingham area. Albion, after their splendid 3-1 win against the Scottish imports of Preston North End in the semi-final, were expected to win, and they certainly began the match as if they had the world at their feet.
Saturday 24th March, before an attendance of 19000 crowd, after two Final defeats in successive years, Albion won at the third attempt. Preston, their opponents, had annihilated Hyde 26-0 in an earlier round, to this day a record score in the Cup competition, and had forty-three consecutive victories to their credit and a Cup goal-tally of fifty for and only two against. They were so supremely confident of winning the Final, so the story goes, that their captain actually asked if the team could be photographed with the trophy before the match.
For the first time a ground was closed for a football match - on a 17,000 crowd inside the Oval - and unfancied Albion gained a popular, if surprising, victory. A side of purely local Staffordshire extraction, with a weekly wage bill of £10, took on 'Proud Preston', a team of highly paid artists, and won by two goals (Bayliss and Woodhall) to one, after Dew-hurst's equalizer for Preston had been hotly disputed. There is no doubt that all the clubs involved found the League was a success. The original rules required the last four clubs to retire and apply for re-election; all were successful in 1889, so the second season started with the same twelve clubs. The 1892 FA Cup final was to be the last staged at Kennington Oval a crowd of 32, 810 watched Albion beat arch rival Aston Villa 3-0. The result was telegraphed back to West Bromwich which was recieved with shock as Villa had been firm favourites having beaten Albion 5 years earlier in 1887. They also boasted Janes Cowan a dominating centre half and Charlie Athersmith a right winger who was only 19 but already an established England international. Albion had talent of their own in Billy Bassett who had starred in the
1888 win over Preston North End.From the kick off Albion put the pressure on Villa and within four minutes 21 year old Jasper Geddes put the underdogs in front. Sammy Nicholls added the second and third comming from"Baldy" Reynolds . Warner the Villa goalkeeper bore much of the blame for his sides defeat, particulary among the Villa supporters who smashed the windows of his business, a public house.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1883 – 1885)

In 1883 Albion entered the English Cup known now as the FA CUP. Their first attempt they were knocked out by local rivals Wednesbury Town, but not being deterred by that Albion entered the following year only to be beaten by the Favorites Blackburn Rovers at the Four Acres in the quarter final. the third season they entered they reached the first of to date 10 finals also the first of three consecutive finals only to lose out to Blackburn Rovers following a replay. In the second final again they were runners up to local rivals Aston Villa who in turn had the cup stole from them when showing it of in a shop in Birmingham. The third final was indeed third time lucky as they beat Preston North End with a team consisting of all English born players.
In September 1882 move to more comfortable surroundings was made when an invitation from Dartmouth Cricket Club was taken up by the committee. The cricket club which had been formed in 1834 played at The Four Acres which is now Park Crescent off Seagar Street near to Dartmouth Park. The Four Acres was well known at the time also for local athletics. This area along with Dartmouth Park was originally dedicated to the local inhabitants for recreation purposes by William The Fourth Earl Of Dartmouth. Conditions where imposed by The Cricket Club that football matched could only be played there on only two days of the week Saturdays and Mondays. The opening fixture played at The Four Acres was 10 - 0 victory against Stourbridge Standard on 7th October 1882. Improvements were made during the summer when the playing pitch was enclosed by rubber tubing instead of ropes. and wooden racks were laid around a portion of the ground so supporters could stand on them.
At the AGM in July 1883 it was announced that Dartmouth Cricket Club had agreed that The Four Acres could be let to the Albion for a further two years. at a rental of £15 per annum and to pay a third of the cost of a new ticket office and pavilion. The biggest game at The Four Acres was against Blackburn Rovers in the Sixth round of the FA Cup 21st February 1885 when a crowd of 16,393 The optimistic crowd of Albion fans had special funeral cards printed prior to the game inscribed with the words "In memoriam Blackburn Rovers defeated in the English Cup Competition West Bromwich February 21 1885". This may have had the wrong effect on Rovers as they went in half time 1 - 0. At half time pigeons were dispatched to various Black Country locations announcing the score (was this the first sports News from the Sky , Sports News imagine Jeff Steling waiting for the updates from around the country covered with little messages from pigeons) the largest crowd seen at The Four Acres saw a thrilling game which saw the Albion lose 2 - 0. The local news paper even reported the defeat as if a member of royalty had died with black edging around the front cover. The last senior match to be played at The Four Acres was against Wednesbury Old Athletic 6th April 1885 The Albion yet again victorious 3 - 2.

While they were based at The Four Acres The Albion entered the Staffordshire Cup for The First time beating Bloxwich Strollers 4 - 0 at home after drawing 2 - 2 at Bloxwich in the first round in front of 1,200 fans . The second round gave us the first ever meeting between Albion and Villa, following a 3 - 3 draw at Perry Barr ( Villa at this time like the Albion had not settled at the current ground) in front of 13,900. On the way to the game both Albion's players and supporters were attacked by the Villa fans who were throwing stones and clumps of earth at them, however backed by 3,000 away support the Albion forced a draw. The Replay took place at The Four Acres and thanks to a goal by George Timmins the Albion went through 1 - 0 . The game against Mitchell St Georges from Stafford the 3rd round opponent's caused a protest after another draw 2 -2 at home in front of 2,000 . St Georges had played two ineligible players, one of whom was Tom Green was subsequently signed for the Albion. The Albion had now reached the Semi Final were Leek White Star were waiting for them at The Four Acres a crowd of 2,00 again waiting to see if Albion could reach their first ever final. They were not to be disappointed Albion running out 8 - 0 winners.

So to the Final against the holders Stoke City. Stoke had scored 42 goals on their way to the Final at The Athletic ground which latter became The Victoria ground (the home of Stoke City for 119 years) Albion wore red and white hoops for the final Stoke blue and black hoops. A cheap day excursion was run from West Bromwich station which more than 1,500 fans took up the chance for a day out, Although this was the first football match between these two teams local rivalries was fierce due to bare knuckle prize fighting bouts which had taken place in previous years between prize boxers such as William Perry "The Tipton Slasher". when due to huge bets not being settled the contests very often spilled over in to the crowd. On the 21st April 1883 a crowd 6,150 waited to see a great final and were not disappointed with both sides creating chances in the first 15 minutes. two goals from Timmins and Bunn had kept the Albion in the Final, but at 2 - 2 it looked like another draw was beckoning when in went a deep cross into the Stoke area both Stokes goalkeeper Wilden and Albion's George Bell came for it Wilden missed but George Bell didn't a powerful header sent the ball crashing in between the sticks and Albion's name was on their first trophy.

West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1878 – 1882)

Coats and hats were used for goal posts (a bit like jumpers for goal posts today). Eventually two pieces of wood with a string tied across the top served as a cross bar the rules of the still in its infancy. A local cricket club shared the ground so the Strollers also used a pitch in Dartmouth Park, carrying the posts between grounds and erecting them as best they could using bricks. On occasions the pitch was being used so the posts would have to be carried back to Coopers Hill.
Although the Strollers had played two games previously November 23rd 1878 versus Hudson's a 0 - 0 draw was recorded this was the first organized game played by The Strollers and a 1 - 0 victory over Black Lake Victoria 23rd December 1879 Albion's first recorded game at Coopers Hill was on 20th December 1879 with a 4 - 0 victory over Bullock's Club, Albion contested 13 games while at Coopers Hill with no defeats recorded against them although four games have no score recorded.
Bob Roberts was WBA's star player in these early years. Standing 6ft 4in in height and weighing 13 stone and size 13 feet Roberts could deal comfortably with any player who dared try to push him aside. He was trialled in every position as an outfield player but then found his niche in between the posts. He was the first Albion player to be caps by England winning his first against Scotland in 1886. Also played in three successive cup finals 1886, 1887, 1888, Finally collecting a winners medal in 1888. He had two spell at the Albion the second for just one season. it is thought that he made around 400 appearances including 84 in league and cup.
A local newspaper commented: "There is no player who has done more to make the Albion the club what it is than Bob Roberts. It is not only his cleverness between the uprights, but the coolness and direction of others."
During the 1880 – 1881 season, 8 games were recorded at Dartmouth Park 5 wins 1 draw and 2 games with no score recorded. Billy Bisker scored three goals in a game against Hockley Belmont in a 5 - 0 victory January 29th 1881 which gave him the record of being the first Albion player to score an Hat Trick.
During the 1881 - 1882 season, Albion's first enclosed ground was at Bunn's Field in Walsall Street now Alfred Street which is near to the Police Station in West Bromwich. The move here was made in August 1881 when a nine month lease was taken out and the players again equipped the field themselves leveling and rolling it and then erecting goal posts something by now they must have been experts in. The posts again linked by tape for a crossbar. The entrance to the field was opposite Christ Church School where so many of the Albion players were educated. As for the ground it self it was so muddy at times that the supporters used to bring there own planks to stand on in wet weather. ( can you imagine the stewards today "sorry mate you can't take that in there health and safety"). The ground was so bad there was no covered stands and one of the original founders of the club Jimmy Stanton told the founder of the football league William McGregor that the only thing resembling a grandstand was a manure heap. The name of Bunn's Field was changed to The Birches and due to the field being enclosed Albion could charge admission to there matches for the first time. The first match at The Birches is believed to have been against Oldbury in a 5- 1 victory.

West Bromwich Albion F.C. Early History

It is possible that an organisation of football players existed in London between 1421 and 1423, but the game as we know it today was still relatively in its infancy. The oldest football club with a well-documented, continuous history is the Dublin University Football Club, founded in 1854 at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. The club now plays rugby union. Sheffield Football Club, in Sheffield, England is the oldest documented non-university club, and was founded in 1857. It initially played a code of its own devising. The club joined the English Football Association (FA) in 1863 and is recognised by both the FA and FIFA as the world's oldest club now playing association football. The club's rules influenced the FA including handball, free kicks, corners and throw-ins'; it did not adopt the Association's code in full until 1877. Cambdge University Association Football Club has been described by both the university and the BBC as the oldest club now playing Association Football.
According to Charles Astor Bristed, in the early 1840s at Cambridge, there were games played between clubs from different colleges and houses. Cambridge rules dates from 1848 and football is documented as being played on the original club ground, Parkers Piece, as early as 1838. The earliest existing evidence of the Cambridge University Football Club comes from "The Laws Of The University Football Club" dated 1856, and held at Shrewsbury School.Imagine this a group of young men hanging around the streets after work. Nothing to do except drink gamble fight or wander around aimlessly nothing change's! The folk of West Bromwich had always enjoyed their 'sports'. These along with the people who engaged in them were none too refined. In the yards at the back of the local pubs many of these sports took place. Cock-fighting, rat killing and dog fighting was common. Wagers were laid amidst intakes of the local brew and raucous crowds cheered on their 'favourite'. These were tough times and the moralist view of such sports, whilst voiced and legislated for, found little favour with the locals. Even when laws were introduced, these pastimes continued.
Bored that the cricket season was over after all many were keen cricketers and were looking for a sport to play during the winter months to occupy themselves. There had been talk of setting up a football team but as football was in its infancy and had not really made an impact in West Bromwich due to the activitys of the above mentioned alternative sports. The rules of the game still at the time being drawn up, what inspired these young men to form a team that would eventually be internationally recognised. A few of the young men had seen a couple of games and decided to try it out. One essential thing was missing a ball! As there were no sports shops at that time in West Bromwich that stocked football equipment and the tram fare would have taken most of the funds to buy the ball it was decided to take a stroll down to nearby Wednesbury were the nearest sports stockist was situated the men knew they could purchase a ball there.Wednesbury boasted a few fine teams at that time Wednesbury Old Athletic who played at The Oval which is where Wood Green School is now and Elwells FC. The stroll to Wednesbury not only gave them a ball but also the name which they were to play under for the next year or two "West Bromwich Strollers".The club was then founded in 1878 as West Bromwich Strollers in West Bromwich, the team played their first match on 23 November 1878, drawing 0-0 in a 12-a-side game against workers from Hudson's, a local soap factory which was situated were Tesco's is now. Most of the Strollers players worked at George Salter's Spring Works;. They were renamed West Bromwich Albion in either 1879 or 1880, becoming the first team to adopt the Albion suffix. The name Albion was taken from a district of West Bromwich where some of the players lived or worked, close to what is today Greets Green.
The next problem the team encountered was somewhere to play the game. Dartmouth Park and Coopers Hill were chosen to host the matches The New Street entrance to the park was the site of the first "Albion" game although sometimes the Beaches Road entrance and occasionally if the weather was bad they would use The Herbert Street side. Can you imagine playing football in the park now the Health and safety brigade would have a field day.No official markings no crossbar as we know it little more than two sticks with a piece of tape across no corner flags just a piece of grass, a goal keeper who could catch the ball anywhere on the field he felt like. Hence the introduction of pitch markings probably just two parell lines four times the length of a cricket pitch and a line to show the goal line then a box of 18yds to keep the goal keeper under control later a full circle added to give the team kicking off control instead of a straight line half way across the field and everyone kicking lumps out of their opponents. The next step a penalty spot 12yds from goal, and then a box 6yds from the goal to stop goal kicks being taken from the edge of the 18yds box. Finally a quarter circle added at the by line and goal line to stop the attacking player gaining ground from a corner kick.
For the first two seasons of their existence, Albion played local sides on parks pitches throughout West Bromwich, Smethwick and Wednesbury, occasionally travelling as far afield as Stourbridge to get a game. The real breakthrough came at the start of the 1881-82 season, when they decided to pay a subscription to join the Birmingham & District Football Association, thus becoming eligible for their first competition, the Birmingham Senior Cup. It was their run to the quarter finals of that tournament beating, as they did, established sides such as Elwells FC from Wednesbury and Calthorpe Edgbaston that made their name in the Birmingham press. Suddenly, the local papers began to take notice of the club, and began reporting on their games.
